The chat also shows the word in every language you study, then asks which ones to keep. Only the words you pick go into your word list.
For a word new to Koboshi, the AI you are chatting with writes its meaning, on your own AI subscription. Koboshi uses no AI of its own for this. It checks what your AI wrote before any other learner sees it.
Quickest way
Connect from Koboshi’s Settings.
In Koboshi, open Settings, then Connections, then Connect an AI app, and press the button for your app: Connect to Claude, Add to ChatGPT, Add to Cursor or Open in VS Code.

Google lets only some people add an app like Koboshi to Gemini: people 18 or over in the US, signed in with a personal Google account, using Gemini in English.
Setup

Coding agents
Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI. Run one line in your terminal.
claude mcp add --scope user --transport http koboshi https://koboshi.app/mcp--scope user connects Koboshi for every project, not only the folder you are standing in. Leaving it out is the most common reason the connector seems to vanish.
Tested end to end in Claude Code.
Chatbots

Claude: Customize, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. The free plan allows
one custom connector, which is enough for Koboshi. The $20 a month plan and everything
above it have no limit. On a company plan an owner adds it once for the team.
ChatGPT: in a browser, open chatgpt.com/plugins,
press Add at the top right, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Koboshi,
keep Server URL under Connection and paste the address above, leave
Authentication on OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue, and press
Create as a plugin. Sign in to Koboshi when the window appears and press
Approve. In a chat, type @Koboshi or pick it from the + menu. Each
plugin has a permission setting, from Always ask to Allow all actions, that decides when
ChatGPT checks with you before it acts. If the Add menu has no Add custom MCP server,
switch on Developer mode under Settings, then Security and login. Plus and Pro can do
this; on Business, Enterprise and Edu, an admin decides. *
* ChatGPT's form shows a warning about custom MCP servers in general, "Custom MCP servers introduce risk.", because a connector can be written by anyone. It applies to what you connect, not to Koboshi specifically. Koboshi only ever reads and writes your own vocabulary.

After that
Three steps, once, then never again.
- Sign in, or sign up Connecting opens Koboshi in your browser. If you have no account, signing in with Google or an emailed link creates one on the spot. Nothing to fill in first.
- Approve what the tool may do Look up words, save words, set your languages, and change the meaning of a word you saved when you ask it to. It cannot delete words, export your vocabulary, or change your account, email or password.
- Answer four questions in the chat Which language you want meanings in, which you are learning, and any others you use. The chat also asks the month and year you were born, the same question the Koboshi website asks. You answer in the conversation; the account is set up from there.
Every tool you connect is listed in Koboshi’s Settings. Disconnecting one ends its access immediately.
A whole conversation at once
Been talking for an hour? Save all of it in one go.
Say save every word I asked about to Koboshi. Your AI reads back through the conversation you are both in, and Koboshi saves them and answers with a list: which words you already have, which it already knows, and which need a card. Up to fifty words at a time.
Your AI is told not to add words you never asked about. It can only read the conversation it is in, so it cannot reach into your other chats.

What about the months before this?
A connected AI can only see the conversation it is in. For chats that already happened and ended, there is a copy-paste prompt that pulls every word you discussed into a file you can import in one go.
