How long does Spanish take to learn?

About 600 class hours, or 24 weeks of full-time study, to reach professional working proficiency. The US Foreign Service Institute publishes this figure from decades of training American diplomats, and it places Spanish in its easiest band, alongside Portuguese, French and Italian.

The Council of Europe's own framework points at a similar place from a different direction: 500 to 600 guided learning hours to reach B2, the level where you follow a normal conversation and argue a point without rehearsing it. The two numbers are measured differently and are not the same scale, but they agree on the order of magnitude, which is more than most learning estimates manage.

Set that against the same institute's 2,200 hours for Japanese and the shape of the decision is clear. Spanish is the cheapest large language an English speaker can buy.

The suffix patterns that hand you thousands of words

Most academic and abstract vocabulary in both languages came from Latin, so the words survive in both with predictable different endings. These are the patterns worth memorising on day one, because each one converts a whole class of English words rather than a single word.

The traps are worth learning at the same time. A false friend is a word that looks like the translation and is not. Embarazada means pregnant, not embarrassed. Éxito means success, not exit. Ropa is clothing, not rope. Constipado means having a cold. Sensible means sensitive; the English sensible is sensato. There are only a few dozen that matter, and every one of them is a story someone tells about themselves later.

The patterns cover formal vocabulary well and everyday vocabulary hardly at all. Mesa, perro, llegar, ya: nothing about those is guessable from English, and they are the words that fill an actual conversation. That is the half you have to collect one at a time, and the half a review schedule is for.

Pronunciation is the part that stays easy

Spanish spelling tells you the sound. Five clean vowels, each with one value, and letters that behave the same way in every word. Once you have the rules you can read aloud a word you have never seen and be right, which is not true of English or French.

This has a practical consequence for how you study. In Spanish, knowing a word and being able to say it are almost the same achievement, so the work concentrates on meaning and recall rather than on sound. That is why a vocabulary habit moves the needle faster in Spanish than in most languages.

How many people speak Spanish?

Somewhere around 500 million native speakers, with published figures ranging from roughly 486 to 519 million depending on the source and the year, and a total nearer 600 million once second-language speakers are counted. The Instituto Cervantes publishes an annual yearbook that is the closest thing to an authoritative count.

The spread between those numbers is honest rather than sloppy. Counting speakers means deciding who counts as one, and different bodies draw that line differently. What none of them dispute is the position: Spanish is second only to Mandarin Chinese in native speakers, and it is official across twenty countries.
